Thehe next camp will be held in the Summer of 2007, Location and Dates to be announced at a further time.
The first CABO camp was held in 1999 as an experiment, but proved such an overwhelming success that it has now become a regular fixture. The camp is held during July and for the first two years has been staged in Montreal in conjunction with Festivale d'ete, (Summer Festival) a highly competitive basketball tournament.
One hundred and fifty games are played in three days on eight different playing courts, an ideal situation for training and evaluating aspiring officials. Both 2-person and 3-person mechanics are taught. All games are viewed by 20 top ranked evaluators from Canada and the U.S.A. including members of CABO's National Board of Evaluators.
In 1999, 10 members of the National Evaluators Board were in attendance, and in 2000, 12 members of the Board worked the camp. The opening day of the camp is a full day of classroom instruction and on-court training sessions. The rest of the camp is actual hands-on experience through officiating games. Officials are watched and worked with during the games, and critiqued following the game. Some games are video taped.
At the 2000 camp head-sets were utilized on one court where the official took instruction through a headset from the evaluator on the sidelines during actual game situations.
CABO camp accommodates "full time campers" and "day-campers". Those requiring accommodation and meals fall into the full time category, and those not needing lodging are day campers.
The CABO camp was set up as an initiative for grass roots officials and first priority is given to registered CABO officials, from novice to seniors. If there are any openings left, non CABO officials will be accommodated.
