Our Olympians
The brightest spot for Canada on the International Basketball scene
over the past number of years has been the performance of its officials. The
International Basketball fraternity recognizes only the fact these are Canadian
officials and therefore a product of Canada Basketball, the National organization.
However it is the Cabo training programrs and selection committees that brought
these officials to this point of their officiating life. The Canadian Association
of basketball officials (CABO) is a volunteer organization and is unique in
the International officiating community in that it is a complete separate
entity from Canada Basketball yet has produced some of the best officials
in the World.
In the last nine Olympic games Canadians have been chosen on three
seperate occasions to officiate the Men's Olympic final. Nar Zanolin in 1984;
Ron Foxcroft in 1976, and Dick Steeves in 1992. Janice Deakin was the first
woman official chosen to referee and Olympic medal game when she officiated
the women's Bronze medal match at the 1996 Olympics. (**Note: Canada did not
attend the 1980 Olympic Games because of the Political boycott).
