Wayne Shipley (NS) Has Heart Surgery
Former National Evaluator Wayne Shipley (NS) Has Heart Surgery

Many CABO colleagues across Canada have had the pleasure of meeting Nova Scotia's former National evaluator Mr. Wayne (Shipper) Shipley. For those of you who have not, picture the most influential basketball officiating person in your province over the past 20 years, the person who has done more for officials in your province, without seeking any fanfare or personal accolades, than anyone else - in NS, that person would be Wayne Shipley. He has served in many educational roles with both NSBO and the Metro (Halifax) Association of Basketball Officials.

He was NS's National Evaluator for many years as well as a former Men's University Commissioner. He has been a tremendous NSBO (formerly IAABO Board 154) member for over 40 years. He has left an indelible imprint on virtually every elite - level official that NS has ever produced; including Roger and Reg Caulfield, FIBA Europe Executive Director Nar Zanolin, Peter Phipps, Ted Wallace, John Fanning and many others.

Wayne and the late Rod Shoveller were instrumental in ensuring that basketball officiating was approached as a profession by Metro Halifax officials; not as a hobby. Wayne was awarded the Wink Willox award in 1989 by CABO and is a lifetime member of NSBO. The list could go on and on but you get the idea.

For the past 10 years or so Wayne has struggled with heart problems. During the last week of March he underwent a triple bypass surgery to restore the quality of life he so richly deserves. As a taxi driver in Metro Halifax he will be unable to work or earn any income for a period of 3 - 4 months. Unbeknownst to Wayne, fellow NSBO member Don Laviolette from Halifax started the "Wayne Shipley Support Fund" to assist Wayne during the period he will incapacitated. In just 3 short weeks, fellow NSBO officials, NS coaches, NS basketball leagues, softball umpires and many others have donated over $4000 to the fund.

If local/provincial associations or individual officials across Canada would be interested in contributing to this most worthwhile endeavor they can do so by mailing a cheque or money order to "Wayne Shipley Support Fund" to:
